False Already In Use Warnings When Opening Files

I recently moved Word 97 document files from an old Windows 98 computer to a
new Windows XP computer for a client, still using Word 97 on the new
computer. I installed Word 97 on the new computer from the admin account.
But I want a limited access user to run Word 97 and use the document files.
Every time we try to open a Word document file under the limited user logon,
Word claims the file is already in use by the admin user account. I've tried
setting WinXP security to allow Full Control by the limited user on the
folder involved, even tried it on a specific document file. Nothing seems to
prevent this false claim. I can click on OK and open the doc, make changes
to it, and save it. But I shouldn't have to go thru these false warnings and
dialogs to work on the file. Can anybody give me some tips on how to prevent
this?
