I know this is a FAQ but I haven't seen any real or logical answers,
so I'll try again.
I have MS Office XP installed, working fine, no problems for about a
year now. Now, whenever I execute Outlook, any other Office program,
or even Visual Studio .NET, the Office " Preparing to install" message
comes up and I get the famous error 1706 when I cancel it.
Here are recent things that may have triggered it:
- I opened a Word doc recently that was updated from Word 2003.
- I've been doing some ASP.NET development - hardly related.
- I recently set the language in Word to Japanese, but it reset itself
back to the default English while still in the same session. (I
didn't really want Japanese, I was just showing someone how this could
be done.)
- I have NOT installed any recent Windows Updates or patches between
the time this was working and the time I started getting prompted.
I can't think of anything that I really could have done to affect
this. I see various solutions from tweeking the registry to remove
patches, to full re-installs of Office. I really want to avoid the
possibility to corrupting my system with registry tweeks and
re-installs on an otherwise fully functional environment.
Since I have an MSDN subscription, I don't mind doing a complete
re-install so that I can continue my development. That said, I have
better things to do than re-install my entire system. It would be
nice if we could collectively figure out the problems and come up with
a reasonably solution.
Thanks and regards,
Tony
