FAQ: How can I make the installer stop running

T

Ted Byers

I have seen this question quite a number of times, and it applies to user
accounts that are not members of the administrators group when the product
has been installed by an administrator (and maybe to others, but I can't
tell that since I have only two accounts on my machine so far, one as a mere
user and the default Administrator account), and it has been asked for the
different versions of Office as well as for the products in it. I don't
know if anyone is maintaining a FAQ, but if there is, this must surely be
considered for addition to the FAQ.

One answer I saw offered in one case was that Office (or product) has to be
installed by each user who could use the workstation in question.

However, I have several concerns with this.

1) I had installed all of the updates for Office. If I install it again for
a user I add today, am I going to have to reapply all of the updates for all
of the users? What exactly happens during these additional installations of
the product? I don't really want to be copying the same files over and over
again to the same location! That strikes me as a collosal waste of time;
especially when this nonsense is NOT necessary with other MS products like
Visual Studio! I thought the whole point of installing a product from an
administrators account was that the product would be available to anyone who
can log on to the workstation! It surprises me that MS didn't find a better
way to address the issue, especially since it seems to occur quite
refrequently. And I would expect large corporations are less than amused by
the need for the sysops to waste time reinstalling the same software on the
same machine for each potential user of that machine. But, it now occurs to
me that, where I last worked, I could log on to any system on the network,
even those I hadn't used previously, and we didn't need to run any
installation programs for any of the software on those systems that I needed
to use; so there MUST be another way! But not being an administrator
myself, I don't know what that way is.

2) What happens to data that has already been added to Outlook? I have data
in Outlook, for the account where I am seeing this problem. Will that data
be lost if I reinstall Office from this account?

Can anyone shed any light on this, in terms mere mortals like me can
comprehend?

Cheers,

Ted
