Fatal Error installing Office STD 2003 trial

Has anyone succesfully installed the trial version 2003? I downloaded it
yesterday, tried to install it today and after 30 seconds it stops and gives
me just a Fatal Error message.
I found many articles about the fatal error when trying to install it, none
of them have any answers, only questions asked. I read through the help
database but my goodness I would have to be a rocket scientist to figure out
where to begin.
I also see a lot of questions about not being able to install the SP's.
Is Office 2003 buggy in how it figures out how to install itself? Why
doesn't it or "Microsoft" make the installation of these programs just a
little smarter with the programming.
My computer is less then 2 yr old, I exceed the minimum specs needed by far.
I keep it clean and orderly and I think that a program that is as expensive
as Office is, it should be able to babysit itself and act accordingly.

Would I have better luck upgrading to 2003 for a CD? I have Pro2000 with all
updates installed now on my computer.
Should I uninstall 2000 myself first or let 2003 do it, if I get it
installed? Or if I uninstall it would the installation of 2003 go smoother?
I don't want stray bits and pieces of either of the two programs just
floating around on my system when this is done. YWIM?
Right now I wouldn't spend a penny on this upgrade, I want 2003 but I don't
want the headaches it seems to bring.
Lost and frustrated right now!
