Fault with cross-refences in word

my cross-refences sometimes insert page or line breaks for no reason. Has
anyone come across this and if so how do i prevent it?

When you insert a cross-reference, Word inserts a bookmark around the
referenced text. If you later press Enter or Ctrl+Enter at the beginning or
end of the bookmarked text, you will get a paragraph or page break inside
the bookmark, and it will be replicated in the cross-reference. To avoid
this problem, always add new paragraphs by pressing Enter at the end of the
previous paragraph instead.
