Favicon

I placed a favicon on our site but it doesn't show up in IE (or more
specifically, I can't get it to show up using IE at home or work). Netscape
sees/displays it, but not IE (6.0). Has IE disabled displaying favicons in
their newest version, or is there something else wrong? See
http://www.qualitybass.org

Thanks in advance.

Yes, the file "favicon.ico" is in the root. We're a subweb on
cddistributing.com. Don't think you'll be able to see our folders w/o UN/PW.
I was just wondering if I placed the <link rel properly. It's supposed to
be in the head, and that's where I put it. Is the DOCTYPE okay?

If you're a subweb, you are not the "root". cddistributing.com is the root.

Ok, I dug the favicon file out of the cache.
It is *not* a valid windows icon file. Also it is not a 32 by 32 icon but seems to be 28 by 30

Go here, http://www.x2studios.com/index.php?page=products&id=11 and download and install the free
icon editor named LiquidIcon XP.

Then create a multi source icon containing both a 16 by 16 icon and a 32 by 32 icon and place it in
the root of your web.

IE "should" then recognize it.

Actually it's a misnamed .bmp file.

It's not a "backup" icon it's a multi source icon. One icon that contains both a 16 by 16 version
and a 32 by 32 version all in one .ico file.

16 by 16 displays in the address bar , 32 by 32 on the desktop

Almost all windows icons are multi source, and some even have 48 by 48 icons in addition to the
other 2 sizes.
That's how Windows Explorer can switch between large and small icons.

what would you name the 'backup' icon?

S

Steve Easton

Only if you have an icon editing program that will let you create multi source icons.
If you're simply creating a 16 by 16 it is "stretched" to 32 by 32 to display that size.
If it's 32 by 32 it is "shrunk" to display at 16 by 16.

A "genuine" windows icon is a multi source icon containing both sizes so windows can use the
appropriate size.

are you saying that when I create an icon (a real one) that its automatically creating 16/16 and
32/32?

(i always thought it was a wonderment how it fit that big icon in such a tny space.)
