Favorites and My Places/Office 2003

I understand that in a certain sense My Places has replaced the Favorites
folder within Outlook, Word, and Excel. In the File Open and the Insert File
dialog, one can navigate to a folder or file, and add it to My Places, but
instead of providing a My Places icon on the left side of the window, it
creates a new icon for each location.

While one could certainly add a shortcut to Favorites to My Places, and
navigate from there, what's been lost is the ability to navigate to new
places and conveniently add them to the Favorites folder. Does anyone
understand why this was done, or able to explain a workaround so that it
works as it did before?

Thank you.
