Faxing with Word 2004 on a mac

When using Word, on a Mac, to fax (first asking to print, then
scrolling down to "fax pdf," then faxing straight from the computer
over a phone line, how does one know if the fax has actually gone out?
Is there a record of faxes sent this way, somewhere in any of theh
programs? Thanks.

Printing and Faxing are almost entirely MacOS X system functions rather
than application (like Word) functions, so you see the records from Word
faxes the same way you do any other application's faxes.

One way:

Using the Printer Setup Utility (in the Applications:Utilities: folder)
Choose View/Show Fax List

another:

Choose Apple/System Preferences/Print & Fax. In the Faxing pane, click
Set Up Fax Modem to open the Fax List window.

I can't remember the wording, but there is an option in Fax Prefs to display
in the Menu Bar. With that on you get an animated action in the Menu bar
when sending/receiving a fax.

And yet another way is to use the facilities of the CUPS (Common Unix
Printing System) that OS X uses natively.
Stick this in your favourite browser on the machine you are faxing from:

Also useful for monitoring print jobs.
