Feature Request: Entourage MUST be able to read .msg files

Hello everybody,

I dont't know what the Mac:Office Division of Microsoft had in mind
when they though about cross-platform business environments (and: YES
we are not alone with our Macs - there are things like Windows PCs
around).

Microsoft Outlook - as per default - creates a .MSG file when you Drag
& Drop an eMail from within Outlook to a folder - say on a network
server.

Here comes: Entourage CANNOT OPEN THESE FILES!

This is ridiculous. As a recently "switched" Mac user with 100s of
colleagues with Outlook and MILLIONS of .MSG files lying around
various servers I REQUEST the implementation of .msg file support in
Entourage A.S.A.P.!

And NO, I do not want a workaround as so verbosely described in many
previous posts. Forget about those. I WANT Entourage to support the
STANDARD OUTLOOK file format. End of line.

Best regards from Vienna,
Markus Hartbauer

Make sure you submit feedback to Microsoft (Help menu). Just posting
here will not get your suggestion in the queue.

Adam has given you the best advice, which is to make a feature request
to Microsoft.

I'd like to point out, however, that very little about Outlook is
"standard" compared to Entourage or most other mail programs. Many folks
get very frustrated that "Application <insert name>" doesn't do
something like Outlook, but the reason they don't act like Outlook is
because Outlook is very proprietary.

Examples: Only Outlook can use PST files. Only Outlook uses the MAPI
protocol. And only Outlook uses the .msg file extension. (Some non-mail
applications use this file extension too.) Most standard mail
applications use .eml.

If you're going to make a feature request then I suggest making it to
the Outlook team, not the Mac:Office team. Ask them to use standards.

I really don't care how proprietary Outlook might be. As you might
well be aware of, together with Lotus Notes Outlook has a business
market share of 80-95% (depending on the country) so the Mac:BU better
get Entourage to be compatible with the defacto Standard.

Btw: Lotus Notes uses MAPI as well and many tools can open and
interpret .PST files. There are also many tools (on Windows!) that can
read/interpret .MSG files. Whyever the Mac:BU thought it would not be
necessary to make their Entourage App compatible with the file format
that Outlook uses as standard save-as output ... well we'll never
know.

I will let them know what I think of it via the Feedback.
Let's hope they listen.

BR
Markus
