Feature request for Word 2007 — optimized paragraph formatting

Jan Sichula

Hello everyone,

I am a Word power user who likes to do everything in Word, including nigh to
impossible. My hope was that the Word 2007 would bring better paragraph
composition, something like the optimized paragraph in WPF as shown at:

http://blogs.msdn.com/text/archive/2006/05/23/604341.aspx.

It seems to me that optimized paragraph in WPF essentially corresponds to
multi-line composer in Adobe InDesign. The Word composition engine leaves
much to be desired. Presently WPF had got a much superior text and paragraph
formatting to that found in the Word. Please, please, include the optimized
paragraph composing in next version of Word, if not in Word 2007. It is much
needed so that the mainstream documents can move into higher level of
typography and we can use Word even for more demanding tasks.

Hi Jan,

Be sure to use the feedback tool from the link below to send suggestions directly to the MS Office Product Team.

You also may want to post this for discussion in the Word Page Laoyut newsgroup as well.

via newsreader
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.word.pagelayout
or via browser:
http://microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/?dg=microsoft.public.word.pagelayout

Keeping in mind that Word is not page layout oriented, but text reflow software (when comparing to 'InDesign'), you might want to
elaborate there with some specific examples/steps of where you find Word not being able to provide text flow as well as Windows
Presentation Foundation (WPF) as presented in the blog link you posted. As you mentioned it might not be something that will be in
Word 2007 but MS is already also busy at work with ideas to design into the generation of Office to follow that one.

I think you want Word Options/Advanced and in the Show Document
Content section, "Show text wrapped within the document window". When
this option is turned on and if you are using Draft view, the text
will wrap with the window size and zoom.

While you are in the Advanced options you might also see if in the
Layout options under Compatibility, "Do full justification the way WP
for Windows does" is also what you are looking for as well.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

Hi Beth Melton,

Clearly the second suggestion it related to my particular need. Despite
using Word intensively every day, I did not know about this option. The
paragraph composition (so called “colorâ€) is much improved with this option.
Nevertheless it does not seem to be as good is optimized paragraph with WPF,
especially when it comes to one word prepositions which are very common in
Slovak, the spaces often are distracting. I doubt the algorithms are same in
both of them. What we need in Word is true multi-line composer which
Microsoft has developed but is very slow to bake in into final retail
features of existing products.
