Field codes/autotext

M

Mette Slater

Hi,

When inserting a generic autotext from Insert - Autotext - Hearder/Footer -
File Name and Path I get this:
FILENAME \p C:\Documents and Settings\mette\My Documents\Testing.doc

I have tried to toggle the field codes without any luck (ALT+F9). I beleive
I may have a problem with my normal template as I have a couple of macros
that I have generated myself. Any ideas out there?? I don't want to overwrite
my normal template at the risk of loosing those macros.

The autotext entry is wrongly defined (ie, it's defined as the field code
itself, not as the field). Redefine it.

Hi,

I haven't defined it in the first place, this was the generic autotext! How
do I redefine it?

J

Jezebel

Perhaps you inadvertently redefined it. No matter. Anyway, to fix it: Create
the field manually. Select it. Click Insert > AutoText > AutoText... Type
the name. Click Add.

I am sorry but I don't think that solves my problem. Does anyone else have a
suggestion? Thanks for trying!

It does solve your problem but you may need more step-by-step help. The
thing is you are thinking in terms of AutoText while Jezebel is thinking in
terms of a field. What you have is a built-in AutoText field that may have
been crunched somehow. You need to recreate the field and then use it to
redefine the AutoText.

If you do not have customizations in normal.dot, you could simply recreate
normal.dot. You'll find instructions for doing so at
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm.

If you have stuff in your normal.dot that you don't want to lose, then try
Jezebel's suggestions with the following refinements:

To recreate the field:
Type "FILENAME \p" without the quotation marks. Select what you just typed
and press Ctrl-F9. This will make your field. Press the F9 key which will
show you the field results. Move your cursor to the beginning of the field.

To make it an AutoText entry:
Make sure you are displaying paragraph marks on your screen. (Click the ¶
button on the standard toolbar.)
In the formatting toolbar, set your style to Header.
Select your field being careful to not select the ¶ at the end of the
paragraph.
Press Alt-F3 and name your entry "Filename and path" again without the
quotation marks.

Since this seems important to you, you may also want to look at
http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/File_Name_And_Path.htm. It shows some of the
limitations of this field and how to get around them.

Hope this helps,

Hi Charles,

Ups - I followed your instructions and now my fields don't work at all in my
books where I have 1-3 pages of page indexing I have lost it all! Really
unsure of what to do as this becomes a larger and larger problem! Please
help. Thanks

There is no way that following the directions I gave you disabled all your
fields!

"in my books" ???? What does this refer to?

1-3 pages of indexing? We were talking about the filename field.

What, exactly, did you do?

Hi Charles,

Didn't mean to sound disrespectful! Sometimes with those things it is better
to walk away for a couple of hours and start fresh. I ended up actually
overwriting my normal template and fixing it.

What I meant earlier with “my books†is that we have several documents that
are over 150 pages and we actually sell those as learning materials. Thanks
for trying!

Kind regards

Mette

Hi,

I didn't take it as disrespect, just a failure to communicate. Are your
documents working the way you want now?
