Field codes help

I need to translate form fields in Word97/Windows98 and don't know
how. To explain:

The text has a fields that says "Appendix", whose code is

{ REF _Ref478790782 \* MERGEFORMAT }

If I translate Appendix in the text, I lose the code altogether, which
leads to think that I must somehow translate the code, which I
unfortunately cannot find anywhere. I'm further puzzled by the fact
that if I copy and paste the entire code in this message, it says

Appendix

I'm obviously clueless about all this, and Word's help is of little
educational help...

Any and all clues and explanations gratefully received.

Hi Tony
This field is an automatically generated one for a cross reference.
It usually links to a hidden bookmark with the same number.

Unfortunately, as far as I'm aware, you can't "translate" these fields
by hand. But if you are just moving them from one version of Word to
another then the cross references should still work.
