Field type not as in import table (# vs Text)

I am importing a comma delimited text file in Access 2003 with no headers in
the text file. One of the fields contains both text and numeric data. I have
defined the field as 'text' in the import table but get import errors for
those records which are text (same thing happens if I let Access import to a
new table). I have tried changing the first record in the file to 'text' in
the problem field but still no go. Other than going through an Excel import
process (this is to be a monthly macro driven process) is there anyway to get
around the errors?

Further to the problem-
If I import first to Excel and then import the file to Access without making
any changes I have the same problem. If I change the problem column to
'text' via Format Cells, Text and then import to Access the problem goes away.
