Fields in Excel not found in Mail Merge, Word

In Microsoft Word 2000 setting up Mailing Labels with Mail Merge. I open
Excel databse and then when I try to set up document the fields show up as
AutoMerge Field 1
AutoMerge Field 2
etc.

Not all databases do this.....did I set something up wrong in the dataabase?
