Fields names and width, Read-only Fields, Overtime

G

Gil

Hi all,

I have a few short questions, and would be happy to get your help...

We are using Project Server 2007, SP1, no infrastructure update yet:

1) I want to change the Task name field width, or the Remaining work
field width (the name of the field is very wide, but it contains
usually only two digits..) in the My work views (My assignments and
Assignment details), but I cannot modify the width of these fields .
Any number of pixels I input I always get the same result as if I
choose the automatic width option.

2) Is there a way to change the name of a column (field) in PWA views?
As with the previous example, can I change the name of the field
"Remaining work" to "Rem."? I know that in Project (client) I can
double click a column and change its title, is there something similar
in PWA, and if not, what will you suggest in order to save space?

3) Can I make certain fields in PWA read-only? Going back to the same
example, in My task (My assignment or Assignment details view) I want
the users to be able to update only the Actual work or Remaining work
fields, and "read-only" the Start / Finish / Work fields. Currently,
if I choose to show Start / Finish fields in these views, they can
also be updated by the users, and I want them to be updated only by PM
through Project professional. Can it be done?

4) How can I modified the My Tasks grid not to show overtime? I want
only Plan + Actual rows to be updated by users.

Thanks a lot for your help,
Gil

Gil:

In general, PWA does not have the nice little change label feature that the
Project Client has. However, you can display information read-only in
various views by creating fields custom fields that use a formula to
reference the value of a built-in field as a way of displaying information
with a different title. Hope this helps.

Gary, thank you for your help.
I followed your advice, and created few custom enterprise task fields,
for example "Rem" (with the formula "=[remaining work]") and
"PMO_Start" (with the formula "=[start]"). I was able to add these
fields to project views (like "task summary") but was NOT able to add
them to My Work views ("My assignment"/"Details"). They simply did NOT
show up in the "available fields" box in the views properties. I tried
creating duration/number/date fields but none of them showed up as an
option in these views.
So I am still stuck with my problem: Can I make the Start / Finish
fields read-only on My Work views?

And what about my other questions:
Why I can not modify the width of fields (even though the option to do
it exist...?
Can I remove the overtimer line on the grid in My work views?

I would appreciate any help on these issues.
Thanks again,
Gil.

Gil:

In order to get task level custom fields to display at the assignment level,
you need to select roll-down for these fields. There is a limited amount of
customization you can do these views, more if you play with the CSS values,
but be careful when doing this. See Marc Soester's blog post for some more
ideas:

Gary, Thanks again for the help.
When I create a custom fields which is driven by a formula (in order
to make it read-only, following your advice), on the "new field" page
- as soon as I change the field "Custom Attributes" to "formula" - the
"Roll down, unless manually specified" option is no longer available
(grayed out), and therefore will not appear in "my assignment" view..
I am back where I started now..

As for changing the CSS values, it might help me with the overtime
line issue. Thanks!
