fields won't be updated

Morning.

In Word:2004 the path/file field in the footer line won't be updated
before printing. In preferences the checkbox related to that topic is
checked.

In Word v.X there was never a problem?

How can I solve the problem?

TIA and kind regards. Friedrich

Huh. Well, I printed to PDF and it updated here, in Word 2004.

Does it update if you control-click and select Update Field?

Does this happen in all documents or only one certain document? Can you
create some test documents to check?

Hi Friedrich,

If it works in some documents but not others, I would try deleting the field
in the problematic documents and re-entering it.

You've checked that the box to update field codes is still checked in Word
Preferences >Print ? Occasionally those settings can randomly come up
unchecked.

For a filepath field, it's possible that saving the document first is
necessary. But I really haven't a clue, as it works here.

Done. Did not help.

No effect.
But I really haven't a clue, as it works here.

It works in every new document based on normal.dot, but doesn't work in
all documents based on my own templates.

Does somebody have an idea what the reason could be?

TIA and kind regards. Friedrich

Addendum:

In the same document within the FILENAME/p _won't_ be updated all other
fields (PRINTDATE, NUMPAGES, ...) automatically _were_ updated before
printing.

What the hell could it be?

TIA and kind regards. Friedrich

If it "is" the string FILENAME/p in your document, that's an invalid field
code and it won't update :) I doubt that it's that, because you should
have got an error. It should be FILENAME /p (note the space)

Sorry: I don't know the answer...

OK, I'm struggling here. I just printed { FILENAME \p \* MERGEFORMAT }
here and it updated correctly. Nake sure you do not have "Lock Field
Result" turned on.

See the help topic "Prevent changes to information inserted by a field"

Other than that, I have no idea what it could be: is your field in the
header or footer? Make sure you do not have the header or footer
"Protected". You can protect individual sections of a document, and if you
do, fields will not update within them.

I'm clutching at straws here...

The not updateable string is

( FILENAME \p \* MERGEFORMAT )

Kind regards. Friedrich
