Figure and Figures in cross-references to captions

Stefan Robert

Hello,

I would like to reference to a figure caption in my text. However, at
some place i want to talk about many figures.

My text looks like:

As seen in figures 3-12 and 3-14, the result of the phase [...]

is there a way to make the "figure" cross-reference have an "s" at the
end? Or to have only the caption number being referenced to so I can
write the word "figures" myself?

Thank you for your help!

Yes. One way is to create the cross-references by hand. If you don't want to
do that, here's a fiddly but effective way of forcing Word to do what you
want:

1. Insert cross-references to the figures. You'll have "Figure 3-12 and
Figure 3-14." This step is necessary to create the bookmarks you'll later
move.

2. Go to the figure caption itself and select just the number.

3. Open the Insert | Bookmark dialog. Make sure the box for "Hidden
bookmarks" is checked and the "By location" radio button is selected. The
bookmark that is highlighted will be the one for the caption you currently
have selected.

4. Click Add. This will reinsert the bookmark around just the numbers.

5. Do the same with the other caption.

6. Select the cross-references and F9 to update. Then type in the word
"figures."

This is quicker to do than to explain. <g>
