Hi,

I am facing a peculiar problem, and I have searched exhaustively before
posting this. I am using Word 2003 SP3

I have a document with many pictures for which I need to give 'Figure'
caption with Heading X- figure Y format.

'Caption' command does not work sometime - what it says is Figure X-Y in the
sub menu, but on the page, it just displays 'Figure' not as 'Figure x-y'.
This does not happen every time, meaning figure 5-2, 5-3 comes proper, but
5-1does not!

When I saw field codes, for figure 5-1, it dint have STYLEREF or SEQ codes
were not there!

Is it a bug that has already been reported to Microsoft?

If you are having problems with existing captions, are you sure these were
actually inserted via the Caption dialog box?

Hi Stefan,

Yes, I captioned existing images using Right click - Caption. None of them
are edited manually.

Thanks,

But you did say that the field codes were missing? Could someone have
unlinked (Ctrl+Shift+F9) the affected caption fields?

Or are you saying that the fields doesn't get inserted (in some cases) when
you use the Caption dialog box?

This is what I did:

In an existing image with caption, when I reopened the document, Cross-refs
(like refer Figure x.y) were says "Error! referenced object not found". Also,
many of the embedded images (mostly Visio diagrams) were not visible, and
said "Error! referenced objects cannot be edited".

What I did is, I deleted all the Error! sentences, re-inserted the images
(this time as JPEG or PNG image), right-click->Caption. In the dialog box, it
said Figure x.y, but after clicking OK, on the document, it said only
"Figure", not as "Figure x.y".

When I saw the field codes (Alt+F9), there were no STLYEREF or SEQ fields
for this particular "Figure" entry, and this error is not happening always.

An image which was properly inserted and captioned, upon next re-opening of
the document, Word says "Error! referenced objects cannot be edited".

I alone edit the document, so I dont reckon someone could have unlinked, and
I dont feel it is a problem of 'right click-caption' rather the issue with
field codes themselves.

Did I make me clear?
