Figure descriptions appear in table of contents

Hi!
I'm writing a rather large technical report in Word 2007 and this problem is
really starting to annoy me now. I'll try to describe it as easily as
possible:

The document contains several figures and tables with a description for
each, such as
"Figure 3.1 <short text>" or "Table 1.2 <short text>", and these
descriptions are automatically numbered with the insert description function
so that I can use them in my cross references.

The figure and table descriptions are assumed by word to be some kind of
headings and appear in the table of contents, they are not supposed to do
this. By inserting these descriptions they get their own style which is
called "description". If I go through the document and set any figure- or
table description to this style("description") again they dissapear from the
table of contents.

So, I tried to change all the descriptions back from style "description" to
style "description" and they dissapeared from the table of contents. Then, I
save the document, exit word and then open the document again. Now these
descriptions are back in the table of contents again.

I did not have this problem from the start of the report, it started after
I'd been working on it for a month or so. I don't know what I changed in the
document when this started, maybe I inserted a Visio drawing but I'm not
sure...

I found a way to go around this bug that worked for a while, but not
anymore: If I first opened an old version of the document and while this
loaded I started to open the new document the problem did not appear.

The document headings are as follows:
1 Heading 1
1.1 Heading 2
1.1.1 Heading 3

And this is what it looks like in the table of contents with the bug:
1 Heading 1
Figure 1.1
1.1 Heading 2
1.1.1 Heading 3

This is very annoying, please help.

Thanks in advance

Make sure that your "description" style has its outline level set to "Body
Text" (Modify Style dialog box, Format, Paragraph, Indents and Spacing tab).
Does that help?

Be sure to update the TOC and save the document after you've changed the
style. If this doesn't help, what is your TOC field code (press Alt+F9 to
find out)?

Yes, the outline level is set to body text, still the same problem.

The TOC field code is:

{TOC \O "1-3" \H \Z \U}

The outline level is set to body text already so this does not help.

The TOC code is:
{TOC \O "1-3" \H \Z \U}

Clear the \u switch from the TOC field code and then update the field. That
should help.

I did also notice today that everything works fine if I copy all text to a
new document without the TOC. But as soon as I insert a TOC and save and
reopen the document the problem reappears.

This does work, the figure and table descriptions are gone from the TOC.
Thanks a lot!
What does the \u switch do?

However, in the document overview (view>document map) these descriptions are
still visible, do you know a way to make them dissapear from there too?

The \u switch forces paragraphs that has an outline level set as direct
formatting (that is, *not* via a paragraph style) to be included in the TOC.
The Document Map is usually the culprit, applying outline levels
automatically in an attempt to "assist" with your document structure. See
also http://word.mvps.org/faqs/general/DocumentMap.htm; the article includes
a macro that restores the outline level of the underlying style for each
paragraph in the document. But note that the only long-term fix is to stop
using the Document Map.
