Figure legend numbering

H

Heidi

Hi,

I want to insert and update automatically figure and table
legends. I know how to do this, but I do not know how to
tell Word that the first legend should be Fig. 5 and not
Fig. 1 (because fig. 1 is already on the preceeding chapter
which is saved on another document).

Thank you for your help!

Hi Heidi

I assume you're creating figure and table captions using Insert > Caption (or in Word 2002, Insert > Reference > Caption). If so,
Word is creating the captions using an SEQ field. You can see the field codes if you click on one of the fields and do Shift-F9. It
should look something like:

{ SEQ Figure \* ARABIC }

To force the first one to start at 5, change the field codes of the first caption only to look like this:

{ SEQ Figure \r 5 \* ARABIC }

Note that if you make a mistake and need to re-create the whole field, you can't type the {} braces by hand. You must use ctrl-F9
and type between the
braces that Word inserts for you.

Once you've added the \r 5 to your field, use F9 to update it, or ctrl-a F9 to update all fields in the document.

Hope this helps.
