Figure or Caption numbering

Goran Ekstrom

Hi,
how do you control figure (or caption) numbering? The numbering starts from
one in each section, would like to continue counting from the previous
section. Using Word 2000 in XP Pro, all service packs.

Thanks,
Goran Ekstrom

I'm guessing the SEQ fields used with the caption numbering contain a switch
that's doing this. Look up "SEQ field" in Word's Help, read up on what the
switches do, and compare what Word has inserted into your document (Alt+F9
toggles between field result display and field code)

Hi Cindy.
It appears that by including the chapter number in the figure numbering, the
counting starts at 1 for each section. OK, that makes sence but it could be
mentioned somewhere!

that's the default behavior for the original release of Word 2000. But it is a
relatively simple matter of removing a switch (\s, if I recall correctly) from
the SEQ fields to change the behavior.

It's not mentioned anywhere - EXCEPT the quoted KB article - because it was 1)
new and 2) unintended that it was the default behavior.
