Figures slow to load in Word 2003

When I open documents with figures in Word that were created in
Powerpoint, the document becomes extremely slow to use. Each time I
scroll any figures on the page redraw completely, taking 15-30 seconds.
This is true even for very small documents (one figure, one page). My
computer is fairly new (2 GHz, 1 GB RAM), so I don't think I am running
out of system resources (though the CPU monitor shows 100% utilization
when the re-draw is happening). Is there an option I have chosen
incorrectly? Am I pasting my figures in the wrong way (I paste them as
enhanced metafiles)?
