File already open

A friend recently upgraded their computer to XP and they are using IE6 &
outlook express. When they receive e-mail with either word or excel
attachments, they have office 97, every time they try to open an attachment
from within the e-mail they get a message saying the file is already open,
which it's not. We have tried deleting all the temporary files we could find
but this didn't make any difference. We can work around this by saving the
attachment with a different name but it would be nicer to fix the problem.
Any suggestions?
