'file' and 'tools' in word2000 dont work

I have Word 2000 installed on my computer. I am able to open old and new
documents. I am able to use the toolbars however everytime I click on 'file'
or 'tools', word becomes unrespnsive and needs to close. I am able to do
everything else in word eg click on 'edit' 'help'.
I have tried deleting the registry key but that does not work.
At the beginning I had a template problem which prevented me from even
getting into word. Ifound out that that was an addin problem.
Could these 2 problems be interrelated? What is the problem with my word and
how can I fix this?
