File Association Problem .doc Files in Vista!

T

Travis Christopher

For some reason, I cannot change my file assication settings for .doc
programs in Vista. Every time I choose ".doc", select "Change Program" and
highlight C:\Microsoft Office\Office 12\WINWORD.exe, it allows me to select
it, but it does not subsequently come up as an option on the "File
Association" screen. I cna open .doc files fine from Word 2007 but it is
frsutrating to not be able to open .doc email attachments directly!

Thank you in advance!

I had the same issue with Vista and Office 2007 and now have it fixed.
Here is what I did:

1) Ran regedit and exported HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.docx
2) Deleted HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc
3) Closed regedit
4) Edited the exported file renaming the .docx to .doc
5) Imported the newly edited file
6) Go back into associations and choose MS Word again (It may show MS
Word, but rechoose it again or it will not work)
7) Open Windows Mail, the message, and now you can open the attachment

Worked for me anyways.

This is exactly the problem I'm battling with, but hourglass's solution
scares me a bit. I wouldn't know how to export when running regedit etc...is
it all quite straightforward or do I need a techy friend to supervise me?!

Took a deep breath and tried the regedit...it worked! Thanks hourglass66 - am
about to try the same with excel. Why could this not have been dealt with
automatically by Office 2007? Crazy.
