file attachment in e-mail

using Word 2007, but save documents as .doc when going to e-mail (AOL) - when
received at other end, formatting is lost (spacing, tabs, etc.) - used to be
a "hard space" or something you could enter on each line to be sure what was
sent was exactly as last viewed - anything like that now?
