File cannot be accessed

I keep getting a corruption on a file with a particular error that says
'file.xls cannot be accessed. The file may be 'read only' or you may be
trying to access a read only location. Or the server the document is stored
on may not be responding.' The corruption occurs some time after I have saved
the file. If I zip the file I can carry on using it. I've tried reinstalling
Office. Any other ideas?
