FILE CARDS

Databases and spread sheets have developed exceedingly beyond the old
fashioned "file card" method. I would like to see a file card software in
two forms (a) simple text - quite similar to so many of the business address
file software but I'd rather have my file cards.
(b) simple "corner shop" book-keeping with only a debit and credit column
and totalling.
and set up so that it is very fast access from the desktop.

Well this is not exactly an Access comment but could be developed in
Access - but my question is why? And why would you want something "only"
simple? I'll explain through example.

Your address cards - Outlook has a good Contact "card list" - You could even
print it out and get your paper cards if you wanted - That simple - but you
also have the option of sorting, filtering, other types of print outs etc..

For your Bookkeeping - if you really want only 2 columns then Excel can
easily handle that.

I leave Outlook open because it is also used for my email ( can't get much
faster than that)- and a shortcut to Excel - nice and fast to load it.

You can use these examples in the "Simple mode" and when you want to really
get into the 21st Century you can post back to those news groups and they
will help you with all the other wonderful time/money saving features those
applications can offer. :)

There are a number of templates available for Access through the Microsoft
site. Here are a few that address the issues you brought up, that would seem
to fit these simple formats that you want.

Accounts Ledger Database: Very simple with debit and credit columns.
Balance is shown at the top of the page.

Issue Tracker Database: Simple text field with a few extra fields for
sorting and filtering. Similar to when we used to put holes and slots in the
sides of the cards to filter for certain things.

A modern text editor will accomplish everything the old Cardfile could only
faster and with smaller file sizes; and with helpful extras like regular
expressions searching and replacing, etc.

Hello Craig, thanks for taking the time to comment. I must confess that I am
not studied in software. I keep two sets of file cards on my desk - one is
for miscellaneous customers who do not have a formal "account" on our
computer. The other file is General information - meaning couriers addresses,
where to buy things, the name of the insect removalist etc. The immediacy
is one factor and the simplicity is the other. I think my main response is
USER FRIENDLY. I do suspect that there are many low-flyers like myself who
would be very pleased to have a simple card file. Having said that, thank
you for your comment about Outlook. I kept it open all day today and
experimented. I think I will be very pleased over time with Outlook for my
purposes. By the way, that posting was my first time on the site and I
really had NO IDEA at all where I should post it for discussion. But I'd
still love to see the idea tossed about seriously, because I think many
people would like it. Question! I want to suggest somewhere that a
FOOTSWITCH would be a good accessory on the average keyboard as an
alternative to the SHIFT key, backspace or other (programmable). What do you
think? A bit lengthy, sorry. Regards, Michael.

This newsgroup deals specifically with table design in Access, so
footswitches do not belong here. A search on "footswitch usb programmable"
will show such devices exist. I too find that my best ideas are usually
stolen before I think of them.

Filecards are fine, until you find a scrap of paper with a phone number on
it and you cannot remember who or why it is there. Even for a simple case a
database gives you all sorts of ways to sort and search your data that can
make your business more productive.

One of our sales people used to tell this great story. He was at a school
trying to sell our schools app to the principal. "Oh, I don't need a
database.", says the principal. "I use a card file. It does everything we
need. Look, I'll show you ... Hey! Who's taken my card file out of the
office again!"

We made the sale.
