Hi, Everytime I try to open some standard saved word Documents a file
conversion box appears. I had an mp3 player disk that was in Chinese and I
had tryed to download for the drivers (unsuccessfully) and since then all my
files have changed to file names like SXC file etc but only in word. I have
tried the trouble shooting area and have gone to options etc and clicked in
and out of the file conversion box etc but nothing seems to work. Help as
some of these files I need to work on and i don't have them saved to disk.
i'm ready to throw my computer out the window.

Thanks

You don't say what version of Word you're using. Assuming you're using a
recent version of Word, have you tried Help - Detect and Repair?

Are you saying that all of your files named *.DOC have been renamed to *.SXC
(SXC most often is an Open Office spreadsheet file)? Or, are you saying that
all of your *.DOC files are now associated as SXC type files, rather than as
Word document files?

If the former is the case, then it sounds like malicious software has
corrupted your files. Even if renamed, if they still contain the same
contents, you could rename them to {whatever}.doc, and Word would be able to
open them just fine. Even if not renamed, when you tell the conversion
dialog that they're Word files, they be opened just fine. In fact, I just
renamed a file to have the .sxc extension. Windows tells me that it's an
Open Office spreadsheet, but when I open it with Word, I'm not even prompted
for conversion. Word knows that it's really a Word file.

Even if your DOC files are now associated as SXC files, you should still be
able to open them from within Word. It's just that the default software most
likely would be Open Office or Star Office.

Or, is a different piece of software now associated with SXC files?
