File Conversion-Text Encoding

E

I want to import an excel spreadsheet into Microsoft Word. Upon import the
file conversion dialog box appears. It is asking me to "select the encoding
that makes your document readable". None of the selections makes the
document readable.

I've been able to open other Excel files in Word with no problem. I don't
see any differences in properties between the two types of files.

Any help is appreciated.

You don't mention *how* you're trying to get the Excel content into Word and
since Word doesn't have an Import command I can only assume you are trying
to use Word to Open the Excel file. - which is something Word can't do
successfully. (Or you may be using the Insert>File command.) That's why the
Convert File dialog is popping up in the first place. Contrary to your last
sentence, .xls files and .doc files are totally different - one program
can't effectively open the other's files.

If you use Insert>*Object*>Create From File you should have no problem.

You can also copy from the Excel file & paste (or Edit>Paste Special for
more options) into the doc.

The old Excel converter which will read and writes Excel files in Word is
linked from the downloads page of my web site, but whether this will address
the problem is another matter.
