File conversion window message with strange characters

Word documents open with the File Conversion window showing first. No matter
what encoding I select I still get incomprehensible characters. This occurrs
in all my saved and new files and I just can't get them to display normally.

That suggests that the files are all corrupt. Where are they stored? How did
they get there? How long has this been happening? Which versions of Word and
OS are you using? Are they fully patched up to date?
