File Conversion

We are using Office X for MAC and needed to open a file that was in our
archives - a very old Word file, so old that I don't remember what version
Word created it, from 1991. I open with all kinds of eroneous synmbols and
characters intermixed into the document.

Any suggestions on how to convert the file to a usable Word document?

You could try "recover text from any file" from the open options.
You could find someone with Word 5.1. If it can read it, then the
current versions of Word can read 5.1 files.
(I just went through a similar exercise to retrieve some Excel Version
1 files) I blagged a version of Excel 3 which was good enough.

Come to think about it, I may have Word 5.1 lying about somewhere. If
you still have a Mac that runs OS 8.6 or maybe Classic contact me off
list and I'll sneak you a copy. If not, and the doc is not too
sensitive, zip it up, mail it over and I'll run it through Word 5.
