How can I convert a file that was written in Works so that I can open it up and read it in Word?

Works uses a proprietary format that cannot be read by most applications,
especially not by Mac applications because it's been such a long time since
the last native version of Works was released. If you still have access to
Works, open the file and save it in a format that can be read by other
applications, such as .rtf. Alternatively, there's a batch conversion
application called MacLink Plus

which you can use. However, if you only need to convert one file, there's no
sense in investing ~80$ for it. If I remember correctly, earlier versions of
Word for Windows shipped with a Works converter; I'm sure one of my
colleagues will show up and tell you more about this.

AppleWorks or Microsoft Works?

If it's Microsoft Works, send the file to a PC that has an older version of
Word on it. PCs can read MS Works provided they have had Office 2000 or
Office 2003 on them. Anything later won't have the converter.

If you can find a compatible PC version of Word (anything older than Word
2007 should be OK) the converter for it is here:

Hope this helps
