File Corruption in Project 2002

Periodically, while file saving, MS Project hangs for a
while. The file which was being save is corrupted. Any
associated backup files are also corrupted.

I've tried all the approaches described for recovering a
file, to no avail.

Any idea why this is happening, or how to recover the days
and days of work that went into these files?
