File Dialog Search Crashes Word

C

Colin Higbie

I have read the various posts criticizing the use and viability of the Search
command in the Word file dialog (I'm using Word 2002 and Windows XP Pro,
latest updates installed to OS and Word). My problem seems worse - when I can
get it to find a file (sporadic, it usually finds nothing, when the Explorer
search correctly finds the file with no problem), then copy the link to the
clipboard, paste it into the filename line in the Open dialog, Word maxes out
my CPU usage and never returns it and never responds to commands. I am forced
to kill Word. If I open the same file directly without going through the
search window, it opens with no problem.

This is 100% reproducible for me for the files on which it happens (not on all
files). Even if I am doing something wrong (don't think I am), Word should
clearly not hang as a result. It may have something to do with the files being
on a mapped, offline drive (my work files are on the J drive, which replicates
to my laptop so I can keep working on J when I am at home).

I suppose I can use the Explorer find (works fine, just didn't want to use it
when already in an Open dialog), but I thought someone should know about this
bug.

Also, if I search My Documents or my C drive (and all subfolders), it never
finds any files no matter how I search (basic or advanced, various options).
It returns "(No Results)" so fast, it seems that it's not actually searching
anything. Even with indexing on (which it is), I would expect it to take
longer than an instant to look.

If you want more info, or have suggestions that may solve this problem, any
input is welcome.

Thanks,
Colin
