I have a file that is know to be good. Recently when I try to open the file, either by double-clicking or opening form OPEN, i see a brief flicker; the file doesn't open, and I get no error signal. Other Excel files open fine.

I have the same problem using a MacBookPro Intel 2.33 Core2 Duo Mac OS X 10.5.3 and Excel 2008 12.1.0 . In my case I am able to open the files using an old copy of Excel X 10.1.9 that is still on my computer. However I can't find any way to save them so they'll open with Excel 2008.

It's quite frustrating that you don't even get an error message.

By any chance do you have sheet tab names containing a hyphen? If so try
renaming it in 10.1.9 without the hyphen and then try in 2008.

I was doing a separate investigation into a similar problem as this was
being posted. Excel has a bug that was introduced in SP1 where workbooks
that have sheets with "/" in the sheet name will not open. We are testing a
fix to this problem and it should be in an upcoming update. As always, I
can't comment on when that will be released.

Until then the workaround is to open in an older version of Excel or a
Windows version, remove the forward slash(es) from sheet names, save the
workbook and re-open in Excel 2008.

I'm sorry that we've frustrated you with this.
