File format is not valid message

Help. I was using this spreadsheet as a merge source,
system crashed. I was able to reopen and use the merge.

When I tried to bring up the excel spreadsheet with the
data it now says file format is not valid.
The other main document does not have the merge
information either.

Is there a way of getting back the data? Please help.
