File Format is not valid

I have an Excel SpreadSheet that was created last November which for some
reason we can no longer open. I have tried to restore from backup all the
way back into November but get the same error:

File Format is not valid

We had been able to get into the file up until recently. Thanks for the
help.

Patriot,

If you're not using XLXP (2002), you may find it can fix it. Sun's Star
Office is said to be able to read damaged files too.

Try to open it in Word, if you can do that you have a big problem unless you
can copy and paste.
What could have happened is that if somebody opened it in word, upon closing
it you get prompted to save, and if you do you save it in word format you
can not use it in excel anymore.. Otherwise try to open it in Excel 2002
onwards, they can sometimes open corrupt workbooks

Thank you...we got it. What I did was rename the file from a .xls extension
to .doc and it opened right up.
