File format not valid

I am using Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac. Once in a while when I create a new document in Word, save it as .txt or .docm, when I open Excel, the Word document opens in Excel, after giving me a warning message that the file format is not valid.

Why do my Word documents open in Excel? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
