File Formats

Is it possible to "lock" down a file format using Office
XP? If I open a excel file in word and save it in word,
it will no longer open as a excel file. The
message "<document>.xls: file format is not valid" will
appear. Can you not allow this from happening?

Thanks
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Word can convert an Excel spreadsheet to a Word document
on opening but it can't save one (it can reuse the name).

When you save it from Word you should get a dialog box
that says it is saving in Word format.

To remove the capability to open an XLS file in Word
you can remove the converter for it, Excel32.cnv

FWIW, the Excel converter in Word is not provided with
Office 2003.
