File | Get External Data | Import -> .xls fails

Before installing Office 2003 Service Pack 1 I was able to import an Excel
spreadsheet into an Access table.
File | Get External Data | Import -> filename.xls

After installing the Office Service Pack File | Get External Data | Import
-> filename.xls fails to work. No error message is generated. Access just
does nothing.
