I'm reviewing/editing a paper. The paper started at 110 pages and 9.4
MB. It's now 106 pages and 18.6MB. Does anyone know what microsoft is
saving and how can I get it to stop.

Do you have Allow Fast Saves checked in Preferences>Save ?
That creates bloated files; leave it unchecked. Is Versioning on? Look
at the Versions selection in the File menu to see if multiple versions
exist; deleting older versions will reduce the file size. Are there
embedded objects? Converting them into graphics will help--or linking to
the graphics rather than embedding them (though you'll have to make sure
to include linked files when sending/copying the Word document).

If it's not Fast Saves (and I probably isn't, these days you have to turn it
on explicitly and nobody would ever advise you to do that...)

Then it's Tracked Changes. Read up about Tracked Changes in the help.

Ensure you understand the difference between turning of "Track Changes while
Editing" and turning of the "Display" of tracked changes.

I suspect that you have turned off the display of tracked changes, so that
every time you make a change, a new version of the text is added and the old
version is marked as "to be deleted" but not deleted. This really hurts if
you move a picture -- pictures are large, and now the document contains two
copies :)

You may find that "Microsoft" is not saving anything, which I guess leaves
only one other choice :)

cheers
