File in use by myself

Opening files on a Microsoft network through Word or My
Computer comes up with "File in use by " the person trying
to open the file. The file is not in use by anyone of
course. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

One note, this happens on a brand new installation of
Office 97 and Windows 2000. This happens right from the
start. There are no locked files.

Hi Carla,

If you are opening the documents outside of Word, rather than using
File/Open, then it could be that you need to recreate the file
associations. Go to Start/Run and run:

winword /r

Note the space before the forward slash.
