"File in Use" prompt not appearing on shared files.

J

Jim Noonan

Operating on a Novell Netware 5.1 network, with Windows XP
SP-1 and Office XP/2002 SP-2.

On either Word or Excel, occasionally we don't get
the "File in Use" prompt when opening a file that is
already currently in use by another user. The program
seems to know straight away that it's in use, as it still
says "[Read-Only]" in the title bar. We are just not
getting the warning beforehand telling the user that they
can't save the file until they try to save it. There seems
to be no rhyme or reason why the prompt sometimes does not
appear.

I believe this has to be an Office fault, because it is
appearing as Read-Only in the title bar. If this text was
missing then I would assume it to be a Novell fault. The
error doesn't seem to be dependent on the connection speed
to the server.

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated! I have
tried every combination of words I can think of in the
knowledgebase but turned up zip.

Thanks in advance,
Jim.

Hi Jim,

Here are a few KB articles that may apply:
"Program Opens a File As Read-Only or Returns a Sharing Violation or
"Access Denied" Message When Opening from or Saving to a Network
Folder":
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=328170

"Files on Network Shares Open Slowly or Read-Only or You Receive an
Error Message"

Note most of the scenarios in the second article do not apply but it
does contain some additional information and references that may be
useful.

Hi Jim,

I just hope something in one of the KB articles will help you resolve
this problem.

Considering my network knowledge lies with MS products, I don't have
much experience with Novell, if you don't find a solution then you may
want to post to the office.misc newsgroup. There are a few gurus that
hang out there who may have encountered this problem and can be of
more help. :)

I'm the farthest thing from a "Guru" but;
Could it be related to the "Shareable" box in the file properties (I forget
the exact tab)?
If it's shareable then you won't get a "File in use" message, I believe.
