xxx.xls is locked for editing
by '....'.
shows user's 'password' instead of 'username' with Excel 2007. How can this
be possible?

Err, password? Are you sure? How you know you are seeing a password and
not some form of network ID?

Correct, password.
Actually this happened with one of our clients, but we run a standard user
naming convention in our environment, so it's not some form of a network id.
And the client confirmed the password, when spelled to him.
