I save a word file using office 2000 on windows 2000 and when I try to open
file using office 2003 for windows xp I get an error messgage saying the file
is corrupted. I know it is not corrupted because I can take the floppy with
the file to a computer running windows 2000 and office 2000 and the file
opens.

If you are trying to open it from the floppy, don't.
Copy it to the HD and open from there and v/v - save the doc to the HD and copy it from
there.
Saving to and opening from will eventually cause the disk to become corrupt.
