File is locked for editting

We have a network running on server 2003, client machines
are all Windows XP SP1. I have a user that consistently
when opening .xls files that are stored on the server,
gets the popup message, <filename> is locked for editting
by 'user'.

The odd thing is, the 'user' is the user that is opening
that file.. and she does not have it open allready.

Also, the open and close time of her files are a lot
slower than they should be.

Any ideas? Version of Excel is 2003

Justin,

It may be that your user is experiencing the problem we had at work when we
first upgraded to XP it would appear that there is a bug in XP when opening
files over a network. Knowledge Base article Q328170 describes it.

Basically the KB says that if the Windows XP Shell Column Handler looks at
the file at the same time as the application trying to open it, the
application thinks that the file is in use. The workaround that they
suggest is to disable the particular Column Handler key in the registry.
But if you don't want to hack the registry then I would think that getting
your user to always opening file through Excel and not Explorer may work.

PS you tend to annoy some people by multi-posting because it causes people
to waste their time answering questions in one NG that have already been
answered in another NG.
