File locks up computer

I run Word 2002 on a Windows ME computer. Perhaps once a
year, when I get a file from another source and I
routinely scroll through it, the computer locks up
entirely. The file tests free of viruses. Does this have
something to do with a corrupted file? Any suggestions?

I noted that scrolling through a file locked up my
computer. I got a discussion of approaches to solving
