File Menu Items Unavailable Word 2003

P

Paddy Ryan

Hi I have just upgraded our network to Word 2003 and some users are unable
to choose File / Open File / New or any File menu option even though they
appear on the list. They are dark colored as if they are available but they
do not work when clicking on them. This behaviour only occurs once Word is
opened and any document that is opened is then closed. This does not happen
on all machines.

Please advise,
thanks
Paddy

This sounds as thought there is some legacy incompatible add-ins or macros
in action. To test for this, start Word in Safe Mode: from Start, Run type
in

winword /a

and press enter. Word will start bypassing all add-ins, templates and other
customisation. Test now. If it is OK, it means you need to check for legacy
macros, templates or add-ins from the previous installations and either
remove them or get them updated.

thanks, that proved that it must be some legacy thing. This was a fresh
install on a new maching but I used the XP File and Settings Transfer wizard
from the old Win2K and Word 2000 machine.

What is a good way to identify what old macro or template etc might be
messing with it?

And I notice there are no macros there listed and it is set to the default
of "High" security in Macros. And I can open a new document (once there
are no documents open) from the "Standard" Toolbar new document icon. It is
just from the file menu that this doesn't work.

That would seem to suggest that there is probably a custom AutoOpen macro.
Check under Tools, Macros: in a default installation, there should be no
macros listed.

Hi, there are no macros listed. I have even tried doing a detect and repair
and restoring defaults but still, from the file menu after all documents are
closed it is not possible to select any items.

Well try this to see if you can find the culprit:
