File modified date

I am using Excel 2000. If I open a file and look at it but
make no changes and do not save it, the date modified
still changes to the current date/tune. On other
computers with 2000 the date does not change unless the
file is saved over the previous version.

How do I change my Excel so the dates do not change?

If you look at the date/time while you still have the file open, it looks like
it's been changed. But if you close that file and look again, you'll see that
the date/time has been changed back to what it was before.

But....

A long time ago at work, I would open a workbook from a remote server, the date
would change and wouldn't change back. (This was with xl97.) But I think the
IT folks did something (by accident???) and "fixed" the problem. I always
thought it was a network operating system problem.
